Rockies select contract of LHP Pedro Hernandez
Club Options Rob Scahill to Triple-A Colorado Springs; Designates Ryan Wheeler for Assignment
The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernandez from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the active roster for Hernandez, the Rockies have optioned left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernandez to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Additionally, the Rockies have designated infielder Ryan Wheeler for assignment. Hernandez will start today's Rockies vs. Cubs game at Wrigley Field (12:20 p.m. MDT).
Hernandez, 25, will be appearing in the Majors for the third-straight season when he toes the rubber against the Cubs today. The Venezuela-native made one start for the Chicago White Sox in 2012 and appeared in 14 games/ 12 starts for the Minnesota Twins last season. Overall in the Majors, Hernandez is 3-4 with a 7.57 ERA (60.2 ip, 51 er), 24 walks and 31 strikeouts. Prior to his call-up, Hernandez had spent the entire season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he went 6-6 with a 6.14 ERA (85.0 ip, 58 er) in 18 games/16 starts. Hernandez was signed by Colorado as a Minor League free agent on November 15, 2013.
Scahill, 27, was recalled prior to yesterday's game at Chicago and earned the win by tossing a scoreless 9th inning. In two appearances on the Major League roster this season, Scahill has gone 1-0 with a 5.68 ERA (6.1 ip, 4 er). He has spent the remainder of the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where in 30 games he has gone 2-1 with a 4.09 ERA (44.0 ip, 20 er). In 33 career Major League games, all with Colorado, Scahill is 2-0 with a 4.47 ERA (48.1 ip, 24 er), 16 walks and 27 strikeouts. The Winfield, IL native was originally selected by Colorado in the 8th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Bradley University.
Wheeler, 26, has split the 2014 season between Triple-A Colorado Springs and in the Majors with the Rockies. In 31 games with Colorado this season, Wheeler hit .232 (13-for-56) with 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 13 RBI and 6 runs scored. Wheeler played 58 games with the Triple-A Sky Sox, with whom he hit .239 (50-for-209) with 9 doubles, 3 home runs, 19 RBI and 17 runs. Wheeler has played in parts of each of the past three seasons with Arizona (2012) and Colorado (2013-14). In 109 career Major League games he has hit .233 (48-for-206) with 10 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 30 RBI and 18 runs scored.
The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
