Rockies win challenge for second straight night
Rangers also get a call overturned at first base in the sixth inning
DENVER -- The Rockies used a successful replay challenge Tuesday to rob Rangers pitcher Robbie Ross Jr. of his first Major League hit.
Second baseman Charlie Culberson ranged far to his right to field Ross' ground ball with one out in the fifth inning, and first-base umpire Lance Barksdale initially ruled that Ross had beaten the throw.
After a one minute, 35 second review, the call was overturned, with replays showing the ball hit the glove of first baseman Justin Morneau, who kept his toe on the bag, just before Ross touched first for the second out of the inning.
After surrendering back-to-back walks, Rockies pitcher Juan Nicasio then retired Adrian Beltre thanks to a brilliant barehanded play by third baseman Nolan Arenado, preserving a 3-1 lead for Colorado.
It was the second night in a row the Rockies used a successful challenge after a first-base call. During Colorado's 8-2 win on Monday, DJ LeMahieu was called out at first before the replay crew determined he ducked under the tag of Texas first baseman Prince Fielder.
The Rangers asked for a review of a play in the sixth and had the call overturned.
Drew Stubbs hit a grounder to third baseman Adrian Beltre. His throw pulled first baseman Prince Fielder off the base, and Stubbs was called safe. Fielder signaled to the Rangers' bench that he tagged Stubbs, and manager Ron Washington asked the umpires to review the play.
They did and after 59 seconds, it was determined that Fielder, indeed, had tagged Stubbs, and the call was overturned.
