Romine rejoins the big league squad

TORONTO -- Austin Romine got the call late on Friday evening and boarded a shaky propeller plane from Syracuse, N.Y., to Toronto, rejoining the Yankees on Saturday after beginning the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Manager Joe Girardi plans to use Romine, who is replacing the injured Mark Teixeira on the active roster, as an option behind the plate. Brian McCann served as the designated hitter on Saturday; Girardi said the Yankees will "continue to evaluate" the situation.

Romine had not yet talked to the Yanks' coaches when he unzipped his travel gear on Saturday morning, but he said he had been doing a little work at first base with the RailRiders.

"I was taking grounders down there, but I think that was more to get me at-bats," Romine said. "I don't know how much that's going to mean up here. ... I played first base in high school and travel ball. I'll tell you what, I'll figure it out quick."
