Ross not ready to rejoin Padres

April 16th, 2016

SAN DIEGO -- Right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross won't be back on Wednesday, which was when the Padres had originally hoped he'd return from the disabled list.
Ross went on the disabled list on April 5 with a sore throwing shoulder. But Ross, who was rocked in his first career Opening Day start for eight runs on nine hits in a loss to the Dodgers, has yet to resume throwing.
"We're hoping to see him pick up a ball in the next couple of days, maybe Monday at the latest,'' Padres manager Andy Green said before Friday's game against the D-backs at Petco Park.
But Green wouldn't speculate when or if Ross, who went 10-12 with a 3.26 ERA last season, would need a Minor League outing before returning to the rotation.
"We'll talk about that; we haven't had that discussion internally,'' Green said. "Once he starts throwing a baseball and we get an understanding of how far off he actually is, I think that will make the determination whether he needs a three- or four-inning rehabilitation start.''
Third baseman Yangervis Solarte, on the DL since Sunday with a hamstring strain, played catch before Friday's game. But Green couldn't guarantee when Solarte would be back.
"I don't know when he will be back,'' Green said. "With hamstrings, they can be finicky. So we don't want to push him too quickly where he re-injures it.''
Other Padres on the mend include relievers Matt Thornton (Achilles tendinitis) and Jon Edwards (flexor strain). Thornton is throwing with a walking boot on and Edwards is increasing his activity, too. But Green declined to predict when either will return.
