Ohlendorf placed on 15-day DL; Cedeno recalled

MILWAUKEE -- In need of an extra man in the bullpen, the Nationals placed right-hander Ross Ohlendorf on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 1, with right shoulder inflammation and recalled left-hander Xavier Cedeno from Triple-A Syracuse.

Ohlendorf has had shoulder problems since Thursday against the Tigers. On that day, his fastball was clocked as high as 85 miles an hour. Usually , Ohlendorf's fastball is clocked in the low-to-mid 90s.

Ohlendorf said he needed a couple more days of rest because his arm hasn't recovered from his emergency start against the Mets on July 26. In that game, Ohlendorf threw 114 pitches, a season high.

Because Ohlendorf hasn't been able to pitch, the Nationals had only six relievers available in the first two games against the Brewers. Cedeno will be the seventh man on Sunday.

"I just needed a couple of more days. … It's nothing that I'm really worried about. I wish that I didn't need to go on the DL," Ohlendorf said. "I think this will work out best for everybody. It would be tough to have six guys in the bullpen while they are waiting for me to be ready."

Cedeno, 26, joins the Nationals for a third stint since being claimed off waivers from the Astros on April 23. He learned of his promotion to the big leagues on Saturday night. As a member of the Nationals, Cedeno hasn't allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings and has struck out one batter.
