Odor still feeling discomfort in finger

SAN DIEGO -- A strange play occurred in the eighth inning of the Rangers' 8-6 win over the Padres on Tuesday.

Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor fielded Alexi Amarista's ground ball going to his right near second base and, instead of trying to make an off-balance throw to first, Odor flipped the ball to shortstop Elvis Andrus. Odor has never done that before and Andrus wasn't expecting it. Amarista ended up with an infield single.

"Elvis was close to me and I was going the wrong way," Odor said.

Odor said his decision had nothing to do with continued discomfort in the torn fingernail in the middle finger of his right hand. But the Rangers inserted Hanser Alberto in at defense for the ninth inning. Odor had played two straight games since missing five because of the finger, and the problem hasn't completely gone away.

"It's sore when I throw," Odor said. "I can feel it. I feel it all the time, but I can play."

Odor was 0-for-4 on Monday but went 2-for-4 with a double Tuesday.

"I feel good at the plate," Odor said. "Sometimes I feel it but not all the time. Sometimes I hit my finger on the other hand and I feel it. But not when I hit the ball."

Worth noting

• With no designated hitter in the National League park, Prince Fielder started all three games at first base against the Padres. Manager Jeff Banister said he wanted to give Mitch Moreland three games off to help rest his legs in the final month of the season. Moreland will be back at first Friday, when the Rangers play in Anaheim.

• Yovani Gallardo was the Rangers Player of the Month for August after going 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA in five starts.

• Catcher Robinson Chirinos, still on the disabled list with a strained left shoulder, was 0-for-2 with a walk and caught five innings for Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday. It was his first game of a rehab assignment.
