Royals announce a flurry of roster moves

The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have returned right-handed pitcher Wade Davis from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list. The club has also recalled catcher Tony Cruz, outfielder Terrance Gore, infielder/outfielder Whit Merrifield and from Omaha (AAA) and also selected the contract of infielder Hunter Dozier. To make room for Dozier on the 40-man roster, the club has transferred right-handed pitcher Luke Hochevar to the 60-day disabled list (thoracic outlet surgery on August 2).

Davis, 30, makes his return after being sidelined since July 31 with a right flexor strain. The two-time All-Star has posted 21 saves this season and is 1-0 with a 1.60 ERA in 35 appearances out of the bullpen.
Dozier, 25, is added to the Major League roster for the first time in his career. The Royals' first-round selection (eighth overall) in 2013 was hitting .294 with 36 doubles, a triple, 15 homers and 54 RBI in 103 games this season with the Storm Chasers. He opened the season with Northwest Arkansas (AA), batting .305 with eight doubles, eight homers and 21 RBI in 26 games, before being promoted on May 7.
Cruz, Gore and Merrifield have all spent time with the Royals this season, with Merrifield playing in 53 games from May 18 to July 24, batting .271 with 15 doubles, a triple, two homers and scoring 30 runs. Gore started the season in the Majors and played in four games in April and collected two steals. Cruz made his Royals debut on June 4 and also played in two other contests, before being optioned to Omaha on June 8.
The Royals have 30 players on their active roster and 40 on the Reserve List.
