MESA, Ariz. -- Eric Hosmer hit a two-run double and scored on Salvador Perez's single in the sixth to lift the Royals to a 3-2 split-squad victory Monday over the Cubs, who got a two-run homer from Addison Russell.
Russell connected with two outs in the Chicago fifth for his second spring homer.
"I'm seeing the ball well and just reacting to it," said Russell, who hit 13 homers in his rookie season last year. "I'm not trying to generate more power -- it just comes with the [leg] kick."
Kris Medlen, making his Royals debut, struck out three of the six batters he faced over two innings, while Cubs starter Jason Hammel gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one in two innings. Clayton Richard, who is targeted for the Cubs' bullpen, struck out four of the six batters he faced.

The Royals tallied in the sixth against Andury Acevedo, who served up a single to Hunter Dozier, and one out later, walked Reymond Fuentes to set up Hosmer's double.
"Hoz had the big double, Salvy got the game-winner and we played good defense," Royals manager Ned Yost said of the win. "Split-squad game ... had a lot of young guys, but they all did a good job."
Chicago third baseman Tommy La Stella left the game after one inning without getting an at-bat because of right calf soreness. His status is day to day. He was limited to 33 games last season as he dealt with a strained oblique.

Edinson Volquez, who could be the club's Opening Day starter, gets the nod. He worked 1 2/3 innings in his first Cactus League outing and gave up two hits and one run.
Up next for the Cubs:Kyle Hendricks will make his first Cactus League start and second spring appearance on Tuesday when the Cubs play host to the Dodgers at Sloan Park. Hendricks, who pitched two innings in relief in his first outing, was 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA last season.
