Royals sign Gee to Minor League deal

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals have confirmed the signing of right-hander Dillon Gee to a Minor League contract.

The deal has an opt-out on March 15 if Gee is not on the 40-man roster. A source also confirms that if Gee is on the Major League roster, his base salary will be $2 million. He also can earn up to $3.3 million in bonuses for games started, and $700,000 in bonuses for a certain number of relief appearances.

Gee, 29, was the Mets' Opening Day starter in 2014, and he started last season in their rotation. In May, he was placed on the disabled list because of a groin strain. He was designated for assignment in June and eventually sent to Triple-A.

Gee's best season came in 2013, when he went 12-11 with a 3.62 ERA.
