Soler to DL, Moylan added as KC sets roster

April 2nd, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Royals on Sunday morning placed outfielder on the 10-day disabled list, recalled and then put him on the 60-day disabled list, and finally selected the contract of right-hander from Triple-A Omaha.
Soler and Dozier, an infielder/outfielder, have been diagnosed with left oblique strains.
The Dozier move cleared a spot on the 40-man roster to make room for Moylan.
Soler's DL move is retroactive to March 30. He resumed baseball activities on Monday, taking fly balls before the Royals' Opening Day matchup with the Twins at Target Field.
With the moves, the Royals' Opening Day roster now is set, meaning speedy outfielder made the roster as Soler's replacement. Gore primarily will be utilized as a late-inning pinch-runner, much as he has the last two Septembers and post-seasons.
While some fans have been skeptical of the decision to have Gore on the Opening Day 25-man roster this season, Royals manager Ned Yost said Sunday during the team's workout, "I don't care if they get it or they don't. He's a weapon. He's more valuable than having a pinch-hitter right now.
"He's a big weapon. We don't pinch-hit much. But we do pinch-run. Not saying we can keep [Gore] the whole year. We'll need 13 pitchers somewhere down the road."
Moylan pitched 50 games for the Royals last season with a 3.43 ERA. But Moylan was signed to a Minor League deal in February, so a 40-man move had to be made to get him on the roster.

"He was productive in the spring, too," Yost said. "The knowledge of who we have with him was the deciding factor. We know he can take the ball and help our team."
The other roster battle was decided earlier when the Royals optioned Whit Merrifield to Triple-A Omaha and kept as the primary backup middle infielder, a move that was expected because Colon was out of options.
Yost said there was no set role for Colon as of yet.
"He's depth right now," Yost said.
A few days ago, Colon didn't know what his future would be with the Royals, even pondering being designated for assignment.
"The main thing now is to be a good teammate," Colon said, "and help this team win in any way I can."
