OAKLAND -- Royals manager Ned Yost said Sunday that the team might extend Jarrod Dyson's Minor League rehab stint in order to get the veteran outfielder additional at-bats before activating him from the disabled list.
Dyson has been sidelined with an oblique strain suffered while running to first base in the Royals' first Cactus League game on March 2. It turned out to be Dyson's only at-bat of the spring, which is why the club is mulling getting him additional work.
Yost and Royals general manager Dayton Moore plan to meet when the team returns to Kansas City for a six-game homestand beginning Tuesday.
"When we get back home, Dayton and I are going to discuss it," Yost said. "[Dyson is] playing very well down there, but the fact remains he didn't have Spring Training. We're trying to get him some at-bats under his belt and get him ready for the grind."
Dyson is batting .250 with one RBI in six games with Triple-A Omaha. More importantly, the 31-year-old has been running with no problems. Dyson has three stolen bases and six runs scored to go with four walks.
"He's in great condition," Yost said.
One concern for Kansas City is who they will send down once Dyson is ready to return. Terrance Gore and Paulo Orlando seem the most likely candidates. Orlando started four consecutive games in right field for the Royals before being held out of the lineup over the weekend.
