Herrera put firepower to good use for country

Royals righty brought fastball to D.R.'s World Baseball Classic team

Kelvin Herrera, RP, Royals
Hometown: Tenares, Dominican Republic

Herrera and fellow flame-throwing righty Yordano Ventura are the Royals' only natives of the Dominican Republic.

Herrera signed with Kansas City as an international free agent in 2006, and made his MLB debut with the team five years later.

His electric fastball -- which can exceed 100 mph -- earned him a spot on the Dominican Republic 2013 World Baseball Classic team, which won the tournament in San Francisco.

Herrera comes from Tenares, a town in the Hermanas Mirabel province of the Dominican.

Jackson Alexander is an associate reporter for MLB.com.
