Doumit's homer leads 17-hit attack against Phils
Willingham goes 3-for-3; prospect Hicks drives in a pair
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Ryan Doumit hit a three-run homer and prospect Aaron Hicks added two RBIs to help lead the Twins to a 12-5 win over the Phillies on Wednesday at Hammond Stadium.
Doumit crushed a three-run blast off right-hander Kyle Simon to cap a four-run fourth inning for Minnesota. Hicks, who is competing for the center field job this spring, brought in the first run of the inning on an RBI double off Phillies prospect Adam Morgan.
Hicks also drove in a run in the second inning with an RBI infield single off Phillies left-hander John Lannan.
Lannan, who joined the Phillies on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million this offseason, gave up one run on four hits over two innings. He also struck out one and walked one.
Right-hander Kevin Correia started for the Twins, and surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings. He's set to fly back to San Diego late Wednesday to attend the birth of his third child before returning early Sunday.
"I felt better than I did in my first outing," Correia said. "I guess that's the goal -- just to progress every inning you're out there."
Trevor Plouffe, in his second game since returning from an injured right calf, had an RBI single for the Twins in the third inning off Morgan.
The Phillies scored twice in the fifth against reliever Jared Burton. Domonic Brown brought home a run on an RBI double before Carlos Ruiz added his second RBI single of the game.
The Twins put up back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh. Drew Butera, Mark Sobolewski and Jeff Clement each had RBI singles in the sixth while Wilkin Ramirez had a RBI single and an error by Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis led to two more runs in the seventh.
Up next for the Twins: Right-hander Liam Hendriks is slated to make his second Grapefruit League start on Thursday against the Orioles at 12:05 p.m. CT at Hammond Stadium. Hendriks gave up one run on two hits over two innings in his first outing against the Rays on Sunday. Right-hander Jair Jurrjens is set to start for Baltimore.
