ARLINGTON -- The Rangers must decide in the next few days whether or not to activate reliever Sam Dyson and starter A.J. Griffin off the disabled list Friday.
They are undecided on both, especially after getting what appears to be a tepid scouting report on Dyson in his first outing at Triple-A Round Rock on Monday. Dyson, pitching on medical rehab assignment, threw 19 pitches over one scoreless inning. He walked one and struck out two, but only nine of his 19 pitches were strikes.
"It was not premier Dyson-like," manager Jeff Banister said. "He threw 10 balls and nine strikes. A fair outing. It's always tough to evaluate rehab outings."
Dyson, who went on the disabled list because of a contusion on his right hand, was scheduled to pitch another inning Tuesday then be re-evaluated.

Griffin is scheduled to throw a 15-pitch bullpen session Wednesday. He is on the disabled list because of gout in his left ankle, but the condition has subsided and the session will tell if he is ready to start Friday against the Angels.
"I want to make sure," pitching coach Doug Brocail said. "Because if it is still bothering him, I don't want it messing with his mechanics."
Griffin came through a 27-pitch bullpen session on Monday with no problems, and Wednesday will be the final test.
Ross continues to progress
Right-hander Tyson Ross pushed his long-toss throwing program out to 200 feet Tuesday. Ross is trying to get on a mound again after being held back for two weeks because of spasms in his upper back, but there's no timetable for that.
The back problems have delayed his return from offseason shoulder surgery; he was previously on target to return the first week of May. He still needs at least 3-4 starts in the Minor Leagues before he is an option for the Rangers.
"Everything went well today," Ross said. "Feeling good, feeling synced up, so I'm looking forward to making some progress."
Rangers beat
• Banister flipped the top of his order Tuesday in an effort to ignite his offense. Shin-Soo Choo was in the leadoff spot for the first time this season, and Carlos Gomez dropped to No. 2.
• Right-hander Mike Matuella, the No. 20 prospect in the Rangers system, is scheduled to make his first start for Class A Hickory on Thursday. He missed almost all of last season with a strained right forearm.
• The Rangers entered Tuesday having been outscored 32-13 over the final three innings in their first 20 games.
