Travis highlights Saturday's AFL performances

Sam Travis' massive day at the plate led Scottsdale to a 6-2 win over Mesa on Saturday, keeping the Scorpions (9-6) tied atop the East division in the Arizona Fall League.

Travis, Boston's No. 11 prospect, pounded out four hits to raise his AFL average to .319. He's now reaching base at a .377 clip.

Travis was named Boston's best offensive Minor Leaguer in 2015 -- his first full professional season. A college teammate of the Cubs' Kyle Schwarber at Indiana, Travis was selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2014 Draft. Between Class High A Salem and Double-A Portland, Travis hit .307/.381/.452 this season.

Basically, everywhere Travis has played, he has found a way to hit. And the 22-year-old first baseman did just that for Scottsdale on Saturday. After lining out in the top of the first inning, Travis hit safely in each of his next four at-bats, including a single in the fifth that plated Austin Slater. Travis would later score a run in the seventh when Dominic Ficociello doubled.

Ficociello, a Tigers infield prospect who was serving as the designated hitter on Saturday, also had a monster day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Scottsdale jumped in front early on a first-inning RBI groundout by Slater, the Giants' No. 18 prospect. The Scorpions doubled their lead an inning later on Ficociello's RBI single.

That was plenty of breathing room for fellow Giants farmhand Adalberto Mejia, who is ranked No. 12 among the organization's youngsters. He pitched four hitless frames before giving up a pair of runs in the fifth. But by then, Scottsdale had already put up a four-spot.

Four Scorpions relievers combined to hold Mesa scoreless on just one hit over 4 1/3 frames to seal the victory. Mejia picked up the win to improve to 2-1. He didn't allow a baserunner in his first trip through the order, but he was done in by two hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the fifth.

Mejia exited with the bases loaded and Scottsdale leading by two, giving way to reliever Chandler Shepherd, who promptly struck out Jeimer Candelario to end the rally. The Solar Sox wouldn't threaten again.

Orioles No. 25 prospect Adrian Marin capped his 2-for-5 day with a walk-off single to lead Peoria past Glendale. Trailing by one entering the bottom of the ninth, Chance Sisco -- Baltimore's eighth-rated prospect -- tied the game with an RBI double. He would go on to score the winning run.

Reds No. 7 prospect Alex Blandino also had two hits for Peoria. Former Pirates first-round pick Reese McGuire went 3-for-4 in defeat.

Rafters 6, Saguaros 5
Yankees No. 5 prospect Gary Sanchez hit his AFL-leading sixth home run and knocked in his AFL-best 17th RBI, but Surprise dropped its contest against Salt River. The Rafters were led by two hits apiece from Rowdy Tellez and Jeff McNeil.
