Padres near deals with two Dominican prospects

The Padres are in the final stages of signing two prospects out of the Dominican Republic.

San Diego is nearing a $635,000 deal with right-hander Mayky Perez, MLB.com's No. 9 international prospect, and a $350,000 contract with outfielder Luis Asuncion, a baseball source confirmed to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez on Friday.

The deals have not been signed yet, and the Padres have not confirmed the signings.

Perez, 16, has a power arm, can throw in the mid-90s and also offers a slider and changeup that he's starting to use more often in games. Some scouts have questioned his ability to consistently repeat his delivery given all its moving parts, and others express some concern about his command issues, which could eventually land him in the bullpen.

But Perez, listed at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, was still one of the top international pitchers available on the market, and some scouts believe he can be an effective starter given his repertoire.

Asuncion, also 16 years old, is a right-handed-hitting outfielder from Santo Domingo. He isn't listed among MLB.com's top 30 international prospects, but at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, he projects well physically and possesses impressive raw power.
