Giants won't skip Vogelsong's next turn

Despite rainout, San Francisco taking advantage of extra rest for starters

LOS ANGELES -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy erased any lingering doubt about right-hander Ryan Vogelsong's pitching status: He'll start Wednesday against the Dodgers.

Bochy had cited the possibility of skipping Vogelsong, which Sunday's rainout would have enabled the Giants to do. Instead, Bochy made Vogelsong's assignment official Monday.

"He's in the rotation," Bochy said of Vogelsong, pointing out that using him in the series finale will give the other starters additional rest. In fact, given Sunday's rainout and Thursday's scheduled off-day, Giants starters will get at least one day of extra rest until May 6. On that date against San Diego, barring another rainout or a major change in personnel, Chris Heston will begin the resumption of starters working on the usual four days' rest.

Bochy had another reason to give Vogelsong another start.

"I thought he pitched pretty effectively," Bochy said, referring to Vogelsong's performance against the Dodgers on April 23, when he yielded two runs and three hits in six innings.

"He looked a lot more comfortable," Bochy added. "He had a little rough go coming out of the bullpen."
