X-ray negative on Casilla's left shoulder

Struck by foul ball, A's closer doesn't pitch Sunday

June 18th, 2017

OAKLAND -- A day after being struck by a sharply hit foul ball during Saturday's win over the Yankees, A's closer relayed encouraging news about his non-throwing shoulder.
"I feel better," Casilla said through team interpreter Juan Dorado. "Obviously it's still a little swollen, but it doesn't affect my pitching or anything like that. It's just a little tight."
Casilla deemed himself good to go, but A's manager Bob Melvin was unsure of the right-hander's availability for Sunday. Casilla wasn't used in the A's 4-3 win over the Yankees.
The veteran pitcher, who underwent an X-ray that came back negative, said Sunday he often stands in the spot he occupied in the dugout when hit and that the incident likely won't scare him away from doing so again.
"I think I just have to be a little more careful," Casilla said. "It's a really great spot to watch the game, but I think I just have to be a little more aware of the ball coming at me."
Casilla said he saw the ball aimed at his head, so he turned and it caught his shoulder.
"I came out to watch the game because they told me I had the day off," he said, "and it was shocking to see that line drive."
Worth noting
• Melvin said right-hander will get a cortisone shot in his left hip with the hope that it helps reduce inflammation in the area.
