Boras doesn't foresee Marlins dealing Jose
Agent not surprised other teams are calling Miami about right-hander
Trade rumors have swirled around Jose Fernandez this offseason, but Fernandez's agent, Scott Boras, does not expect the Marlins to deal the talented right-hander.
During an interview Tuesday on SiriusXM's MLB Network Radio channel, Boras told hosts Mike Ferrin and Jon Paul Morosi that while other teams have interest in Fernandez, players of his age and ability "rarely" are dealt.
"I talk to [Marlins owner] Jeffrey Loria and I talk to [president of baseball operations] Mike Hill, and I think they realize that they have something," Boras said. "They have a Cuban-born player playing in Miami who is a brilliant talent. You couldn't ask for a better fit for all the parties in this situation.
"And I would expect that any and all Major League teams would be calling on Jose. He's young, he's talented and certainly you would expect that there would be a lot of dialogue about it because you wouldn't be doing your job if you didn't ask. But when you've been in this business a long time and you have a lot of great young players, particularly young players who their salaries are just at the beginning level of their careers, teams are going to always ask about them. Rarely are they ever traded, and I think that's the case with Jose as well."
Fernandez, the 2013 National League Rookie of the Year Award winner, is 22-9 with a 2.40 ERA and 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings over 47 career starts. The 23-year-old returned from Tommy John surgery in July and made 11 starts for Miami in 2015, posting a 2.92 ERA.
