Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that Scott Hunter has been named the Mariners Director of Amateur Scouting.
Hunter, 40, just completed his 22nd season in professional baseball, including the past 3 seasons with the Mariners. Hunter has served as the Mariners international crosschecker since 2014.
In his new role, he will report to Vice President of Player Personnel, Tom Allison.
"Scott has seen professional baseball through a myriad of different lenses, both domestically and abroad," Dipoto said. "His diverse experiences have produced a well-balanced set of skills as an evaluator, communicator, teacher, and decision maker. This well-deserved promotion will only enhance the positive impact he continues to make with the Mariners."
Prior to joining the Mariners, Hunter spent 10 seasons as a coach or scout in the New York Mets organization, including four years as a northeast regional scouting supervisor and crosschecker from 2009 - 2013. Hunter was a coach with A Brooklyn in 2006 and rookie Gulf Coast League Mets in 2005. He also served as an area scout for the Mets in the Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania areas from 2004 - 2009.
After being named a USA Today All American as well as a Gatorade All American in 1993, Hunter was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 5th round of the 1993 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Northeast High School (Philadelphia, Penn.). He played 9 seasons in the minor leagues, primarily as an outfielder, from 1994 - 2002 in the Dodgers (1994-95), Mets (1995-99 & 2001-02), Expos (1999-2000), Indians (2000) and Orioles (2002) organizations.
Scott and his wife, Kari, have two sons, Cade and Grant.
