Second annual Brewers Green Week set for June 18-21

Brewers to continue “Brewing a Greener Game” initiative with numerous events at Miller Park

MILWAUKEE, WI – Miller Park is awash in green—the roof, the seats and the field.  Next week, the Brewers and Miller Park will celebrate the second annual “Green Week” as their “Brewing a Greener Game” sustainability initiative will be highlighted with a series of events around the ballpark.

The week will kick off on Monday as the Brewers and Blue Jays begin their three-game series at Miller Park with a 7:10 p.m. start.  The first 15,000 fans will receive a Sendik’s reusable bag, courtesy of Balistreri owned and operated Sendik’s Markets.  Representatives from Johnson Controls, Inc. and the U.S. Green Building Council will be on hand for the first pitch to celebrate Miller Park’s recent LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.  In March, Miller Park became just the third stadium in Major League Baseball to receive LEED certification in the category of Existing Building Operations and Maintenance.  Also on Monday, fans tuned into the broadcast on FOX Sports Wisconsin will see special green tips and other information on “Brewing a Greener Game.”

On Tuesday, Milwaukee Brewers employees will spend the morning cleaning up trash and other debris around the Hank Aaron State trail near Miller Park.  Last year, Brewers employees collected over 500 pounds of trash.

At the Brewers game on Wednesday afternoon, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will give away 7,000 seedlings as a part of the “Root, Root, Root for the Brewers” Plant-A-Tree program.  Last June, the Brewers launched this program through a commitment to offset the trees used for ticket stock by purchasing and planting one tree for every 20,000 tickets sold.  In 2011, the Brewers planted 154 trees – all native Wisconsin species along the Hank Aaron State Trail (between 60th and 68th Streets).

Throughout the three-game series against the Blue Jays, the Loge Level Chef’s Table (outside section 215) will feature a special “Green Week” theme.  The menu items include a minimally processed organic maple brown sugar braised pork belly and organic whole fruit.  In addition, the Brewers Gameday magazine will be printed on recycled paper using soy-based inks.

There is no Brewers game on Thursday, but the “Green Week” continues with an eCycling event in collaboration with Waste Management. Household items of unused or unwanted electronic equipment will be collected in the Money and Fingers lots from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Last June, the eCycling event gathered over 40,000 pounds of electronic waste to be recycled.

More information on the “Brewing a Greener Game” initiative, including specifics regarding permissible recyclable items for the eCycling event, can be found at brewers.com/brewinggreen.
