Second rehab start for Cashner already set

PITTSBURGH -- Andrew Cashner's first Minor League rehabilitation start went so well that the team will send him back out on another one on Wednesday, this time with Triple-A El Paso.

Cashner, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 21 with right shoulder soreness, tossed two scoreless innings on Friday for Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore. Cashner allowed one hit with three strikeouts. He threw 24 pitches, 19 for strikes.

"His velocity was his normal … low 90s, up to 94 a few times," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He threw great and was very efficient. We got good reports from a number of guys."

Cashner will throw a side session on Sunday in Lake Elsinore and will be back at Petco Park on Monday to work out with the team before heading to El Paso, the team's wildly successful first-year Triple-A affiliate.

Black confirmed that Cashner would make two more Minor League rehab appearances in order to build his endurance, and also his pitch count to between "75 and 80" pitches.

That could potentially put Cashner in a position to rejoin the Padres' starting rotation on or around Aug. 23.

"He's on the move," Black said. "He's feeling good."

Cashner is 2-6 with a 2.36 ERA in 12 starts. He also missed time in May with soreness in his right elbow.
