SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Shane Victorino, who has been slowed this spring by a strained right calf, will not make the Cubs' Opening Day roster and is considering whether he'll rehab in Mesa and then play for the organization's Triple-A team.
Victorino, 35, signed a Minor League contract with the Cubs on Feb. 26. He played in four games, but has not seen any action since March 8.
The Cubs have offered him a chance to rehab at the complex in Mesa, then play at Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs said Thursday that Victorino has not decided what to do.

Last season, Victorino batted .230 in 71 games with the Red Sox and Angels combined. In 12 seasons, the two-time All-Star has a career .275 batting average. A switch-hitter, Victorino was considered an extra outfielder for the Cubs.
On Thursday, Victorino met with Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and manager Joe Maddon.
"He's not going to be able to start the season with us," Maddon said. "We're working on alternative plans right now."
