Short hops

• Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso (right hand contusion) missed his fourth consecutive game on Tuesday and wasn't in the starting lineup on Wednesday, a day after he tested his hand by hitting in the cage and later during batting practice.

As it turns out, he might have hit too much. His hand was still sore on Wednesday.

"I think the volume [of hitting] might have caught up to him," said Black, who called a disabled list stint "highly unlikely."
