Short hops

• Black said left fielder Carlos Quentin's left knee was "doing better" before Friday's game against the Yankees, but he wasn't in the starting lineup. Quentin tweaked the knee on Saturday against the D-backs and then didn't play in Wednesday's loss to the Reds. The hope was that getting that day off, followed by Thursday's off-day, would be enough to get him back in the lineup. Black did not rule out Quentin entering Friday's game at some point.

"We're hoping he's in there at some point," Black said.

• This series against the Yankees is just the second series Black has managed against them. The first was in 2008 at the old Yankee Stadium. He said before Friday's game that he was happy the fans in San Diego got the chance to see the Yankees in their first visit to Petco Park and first trip to San Diego since 2002.

"I think this is great for San Diego," Black said. "This is what the Interleague decision was all about and this is great for our fans to see such a storied franchise."
