Short hops

• Right-hander Andrew Cashner threw his second flat-ground session before Monday's game and is set to throw a bullpen session Tuesday at Chase Field before the Padres face the D-backs. Cashner has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 17 with soreness in his right elbow. He said Monday that the elbow feels strong and that he'll know more after Tuesday's session. His manager, Bud Black, seems optimistic as well.

"I'm looking forward to that," Black said of Cashner's bullpen session. "He's encouraged how he feels. As of right now, it's headed in the right direction."

• Outfielder Will Venable was in the original lineup Monday in center field but was a scratch due to a sore right foot. He was hit on the foot by a Jason Hammel pitch in the first inning of the Padres' 4-3 victory over the Cubs on Sunday. He remained in the game and even stole a base later that inning. Alexi Amarista replaced Venable in Monday's adjusted lineup.
