Showalter wants to keep Schoop versatile

BOSTON -- Jonathan Schoop started at second base on Sunday night, with manager Buck Showalter --despite saying previously he didn't want to move the rookie around -- wanting to make sure Schoop wasn't too far removed from across the diamond.

"When Manny [Machado] comes back, I want to keep all our options open," Showalter said. "[Schoop's] fine anyplace. I think it's good for him to stay connected to both places. Because you don't know how Manny is going to do, he may have a setback tomorrow, you never know what's going to happen. So, I want to keep all our options open at second, too. I think that's where [Schoop] may end up. Who knows?"

Machado's pending arrival will complicate things for the current setup of Schoop, Steve Lombardozzi and Ryan Flaherty, who all have Minor League options and could be sent down if needed.

"I do think about it. In quiet moments, private moments. What would you do if it's today?" Showalter said. "But it's not. There's a lot of things that could happen between now and then that might make it an easier decision. I hope it doesn't. I hope it's a real tough one."
