MESA, Ariz. -- Big innings and crooked numbers ruled the day as the D-backs defeated the A's, 12-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Hohokam Stadium.
Oakland got off to a fast start with five runs in the second and a pair in both the fourth and sixth. However, Arizona has boasted one of the best offenses all spring, and it showed once again on Wednesday afternoon.
Led by first baseman Phil Gosselin, the D-backs struck for six in the fifth, two in the sixth and scratched across another run in the seventh.
Chad Pinder, the Athletics' No. 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, capped a five-run second with a two-run homer off of Arizona's Shelby Miller.
Miller, the D-backs' No. 2 starter, didn't have the final spring tuneup he was hoping for as he gave up seven runs on seven hits in four innings.
Before Pinder cleared the bases, Chris Coghlan began the scoring with a two-run double, and he came home a few pitches later when Yonder Alonso collected a double of his own. The back-to-back two-baggers continued trends of hot hitting from both Coghlan and Alonso. Coghlan has eight hits in his past 19 at-bats (.421), while Alonso has collected a hit in six of his past nine (.667) trips to the plate.
Matt Chapman, the A's No. 6 prospect, came up with a clutch two-out, two-run single in the fourth, extending Oakland's lead to 7-0. Chapman notched his first multihit game of the spring Tuesday and followed that up with another impressive game Wednesday. The third baseman hit his fifth homer of the spring, a two-run blast in the sixth, and finished with four RBIs on the afternoon.
However, Arizona began the day with a league-leading .319 average, .530 slugging percentage, 214 runs and 358 hits, and it wasn't long until the D-backs' offense came to life.
Oakland starter Rich Hill began the game with four straight zeros, but he wasn't able to get out of the fifth. Hill gave up two runs on two hits in 4 1/3 innings.
"Me and Stephen [Vogt] got on a great roll to start the game and Josh [Phegley] came in and did a great job," Hill said. "Those guys are great back there and just picking up the pace a little bit and getting in attack mode right out of the gate, in the bullpen, carried over into the game."
The outing was Hill's final Cactus League start before the regular season and the left-hander was pleased to end the spring on a positive note.
"I was happy with everything," Hill said. "Everything came out of my hand the way I wanted it to."
Gosselin put the D-backs on the board with a three-run triple and Welington Castillo followed that up with a two-run homer off the left-field scoreboard. Yasmany Tomas then delivered an RBI single for Arizona's sixth run.
Gosselin, who went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, drove in two more with an RBI double in the sixth, and Tuffy Gosewisch tied the game with a single in the seventh. Chad Oberacker's two-run homer gave Arizona a three-run lead in the ninth inning.
D-backs Up Next: The D-backs close out the Cactus League portion of their spring schedule as Braden Shipley makes a 12:10 p.m. MST start against the Rockies at Salt River Fields on Thursday. Arizona will then play a pair of exhibition games against the Royals on Friday and Saturday at Chase Field. Patrick Corbin, who had been scheduled to start Thursday, will throw in a Minor League game instead since he will face the Rockies in the regular season next Wednesday.
