Bill Center, longtime sportswriter for U-T San Diego, is an employee of the Padres.
Right-handed pitching prospects Jacob Nix and Dinelson Lamet turned in strong starts Friday night while Jabari Blash homered, Alex Dickerson extended his hitting streak to 18 games and Yangervis Solarte had three hits in his second rehab game for Triple-A El Paso.
The hitting heroics weren't quite enough, however, as Round Rock scored a 14-10 victory at El Paso to end the Chihuahuas six-game winning streak and club-record, eight-game home winning streak.
Solarte was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and a walk with two runs scored. In two rehab starts with El Paso, Solarte, who played both second and third Friday night, is 5-for-7 with a double and two triples.
Blash hit a two-run homer in four at-bats shortly after being activated at El Paso. Dickerson (.409) had a double in four at-bats with two RBIs and two runs scored while extending the longest hitting streak in Chihuahuas history. Nix, 20, the Padres third-round pick last June, allowed three hits with five strikeouts over five innings to lower his earned run average to 2.10 for Class A Fort Wayne.
Lamet, 23, allowed a run on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts in five innings to lower his ERA to 1.69 for high Single-A Lake Elsinore, which scored a 5-4 win over Bakersfield at The Diamond on center fielder Franchy Cordero's eighth-inning homer.
Cordero (.283) was 2-for-3 with his fourth homer and two RBIs for the Storm (19-23). Left fielder Luis Tejada (.194) was also 2-for-3 with his fourth homer. First baseman Trae Santos (.200) was 1-for-3 with a two-run triple.
Right-hander Blake Rogers followed Lamet and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in two innings in his first outing for Lake Elsinore. Right-hander Ben Paullus (1-0) allowed a run on two hits with a strikeout in an inning to pick up the win. Right-hander Colby Blueberg (1.35 ERA) worked a perfect ninth to get his seventh save.
Rogers and Paullus joined the Storm from extended spring training earlier Friday. The Storm placed right-hander Bryan Verbitsky on the seven-day, California League disabled list and transferred right-handed reliever Aaron Cressley to extended spring training in Arizona.
There was one other move in the Padres system Friday. To activate Blash, El Paso transferred infielder Diego Goris to extended spring training.
