Source: Nats agree to deal with infielder Stewart

WASHINGTON -- In need of a left-handed bat off the bench, the Nationals signed third baseman Ian Stewart to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training, two baseball sources confirmed to MLB.com.

The Nationals have not confirmed the deal.

This past season, Stewart played with the Angels, batting .176 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 24 games. The 29-year-old is best remembered for his four-plus years with the Rockies from 2007-11. Stewart's best season was in 2009, when he hit .228 with a career-high 25 home runs and 70 RBIs.

The Nationals' bench was one of the least productive in baseball this past season. If he makes the team in 2015, Stewart could add left-handed pop off the bench.
