Source: White Sox to promote prospect Montas

Right-hander Frankie Montas, the White Sox No. 2 prospect, will be promoted to the Major Leagues for Friday's doubleheader against the Royals at U.S. Cellular Field, according to a source. The club has not confirmed the move.

Teams are allowed to add a 26th man to their roster for doubleheaders, and it appears likely that Montas will come up in that role.

Montas, also ranked at No. 73 on the MLBPipeline.com Top 100, has made 15 starts for Double-A Birmingham this season, going 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA. He has struck out 62 and walked 29 over 73 innings, while batters are hitting only .205 against him, with one home run.

The 22-year-old Dominican Republic native signed with the Red Sox in 2009 and came to Chicago in July '13 as part of a three-way deal with Boston and Detroit, in which the White Sox gave up Jake Peavy. Montas features a fastball that can reach triple digits, as well as a slider and a changeup.
