Springer bests DeShields in friendly Super Bowl wager

Rangers OF, a Falcons fan, has to wear Patriots jersey to camp

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Although he won't be in Arizona to see it, Astros outfielder is reveling in the fact that , his close friend and former teammate, will have to wear a Tom Brady jersey at Rangers camp in Surprise, Ariz., this spring.
Springer and DeShields -- who were both Astros first-round Draft picks and were Minor League roommates -- attended Super Bowl LI in Houston earlier this month. Springer, who grew up in Connecticut, is a Patriots fan. DeShields, who's from Atlanta, is a Falcons fan.
The bet was that the loser would have to wear the jersey of the other guy's favorite team. Even Springer admitted he thought he had lost when the Falcons were up big at the half.

"I texted Delino because he was there with me, 'The Falcons are going to win, 42-10,'" Springer said. "He said, 'No', and now he has to wear a Tom Brady jersey every day to Spring Training … for at least a week. I almost had to wear a [Devonta] Freeman jersey. If I was going to have to pick somebody, it was going to be [Julio] Jones or Freeman, and I don't have to do it, thank God. That would have been horrible to come in here with a Falcons shirt on. Not ideal. That's probably, arguably the greatest game of all time."

The Falcons led the Patriots, 21-3, at halftime of the Super Bowl before New England, behind Brady, rallied to win, 34-28, in overtime in the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.
"I don't think you're even going to see something like that again for a long, long time," said Springer, who also attended the Ohio State-Michigan game last year, which the Buckeyes won, 30-27, in double overtime. His sister plays softball at Ohio State.
"I probably went to two of the best football games to go to, except for the Clemson-Alabama one," Springer said.
Springer said DeShields, who was the No. 8 overall pick by the Astros in the 2010 MLB Draft and was lost in the 2014 Rule 5 Draft, was so upset that he left his Freeman jersey hanging in Springer's closet.
"His pride is going to be hurt when it shows up in his locker in about three days," Springer said. "Just having some fun with an old friend and getting to enjoy that was good."
