SAN DIEGO -- It's not unusual to see Giancarlo Stanton helping the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. But the way he went about it on Monday night at the T-Mobile Home Run Derby was over the top.
The Marlins' slugger won the event at Petco Park with an awe-inspiring record 61 home runs, and with the event sponsor offering to double the total jackpot raised during the event, he showed his powerful impact there, as well. Stanton alone accounted for $130,000 of the total $582,000 that will go to B&GCA.
"To contribute that to the Boys & Girls Club is huge," Stanton said. "I'm involved with them, and I love going to visit and helping out in any way I can. Hitting some home runs can help, too. That's good."

Each regular home run was worth $1,000 from T-Mobile, and any T-Mobile magenta ball knocked out in a bonus round was worth $2,000. Stanton hit 24 homers in the first round, including three magenta balls. He hit 17 in the second round with no magenta, and then 20 in the final round with one of the special balls. That added up to $65,000, and that was matched by the sponsor.

Peter DeLuca, T-Mobile's senior vice president of brand communications, said it was "undoubtedly one of the great nights of the summer."
At the start of the Home Run Derby, all eight participants receive $10,000 from the jackpot for their local chapter of the Boys & Girls Club and a local youth baseball initiative of their choosing. The rest of the charity pool will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club in local youth baseball initiatives chosen by the winner, in this case Stanton.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America is celebrating a quarter-century as MLB's official charity. Earlier in the day, Commissioner Rob Manfred led a caravan of MLB and Padres personnel across the border to Tijuana, Mexico, for a historic event to dedicate a big refurbishment of that country's first Boys & Girls Club. It was one of several community events at All-Star Week that benefit B&GCA.
"T-Mobile's contribution will help Major League Baseball continue to provide great futures for the children served by MLB's official charity, Boys & Girls Clubs of America," said MLB vice president of community affairs Tom Brasuell.
