CarGo is king of laser-like homers

Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez continued his recent torrid home run pace on Monday, hitting an absolute laser shot against the Mets that checks in as this week's Statcast™ Play of the Week.

Though crushing long balls is nothing new for Gonzalez -- he has a Major League-high 22 homers since June 6 -- his latest blast was far from a no-doubter off the bat. Statcast™ shows that the ball left his bat at a launch angle of only 16.55 degrees, the 19th-lowest angle of any home run hit this season.

Batting with a runner on first base and nobody out in the top of the fourth inning against Mets starter Jon Niese, Gonzalez roped a line drive toward the left-center-field gap at Citi Field. The ball carried just far enough to clear the fence before striking a railing and falling back onto the field as Mets outfielders Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto stared in apparent disbelief that the ball cleared the wall.

The fact that Gonzalez hit the ball on such a line -- and that it jumped off his bat at 110.2 mph, per Statcast™ -- produced a total hang time of only 3.85 seconds from the point of contact until hitting that railing above the wall.

As for the low launch angle, Gonzalez is certainly no stranger to hitting line-drive home runs.

In fact, Gonzalez's average launch angle of 23.54 degrees on his 26 home runs is the lowest among any player with at least 10 homers this year. Angels outfielder Mike Trout is a close second at 23.63 degrees, while Cespedes (23.86), Kendrys Morales (24.66) and Hanley Ramirez (24.75) round out the top five.

Gonzalez's most recent laser shot came up just 0.12 degrees shy of his season-low home run launch angle of 16.43 degrees. That particular line shot came off of Dodgers co-ace and National League Cy Young Award candidate Zack Greinke back on May 16.
