Stats of the Day: Twice is nice for Segura

September 27th, 2016

Here are three interesting items from around the big leagues on Monday …
In the D-backs' 14-4 win over the Nationals, homered twice for the third time in his past 13 games. In his first 613 career games, Segura had a pair of multihomer efforts. With this latest barrage, Segura has four multihomer efforts in 2016 -- all from the leadoff spot. Dating back to 1913, he joins the following players to have at least four from the leadoff spot in a season: Felipe Alou (1966), Lou Brock ('67), Bobby Bonds ('75), Brady Anderson ('96), (2001), Jacque Jones ('02), Alfonso Soriano ('02, '06, '07), ('07), ('08), ('08), ('09, '11) and ('16).
• Brewers leadoff hitter also posted a two-homer game, and he now has 18 roundtrippers to go along with 59 steals. There hasn't been a 20-homer, 60-steal line since Rickey Henderson reached those tallies in 1990. That season saw Henderson get there for the third time (in '85 and '86, he went 20-80). Eric Davis (also 20-80) did this in '86, and Joe Morgan did it in '73 and '76.

connected on a pair of home runs, with the second giving the Mariners a 4-3 lead in the 11th inning for a win over the Astros. Cano added a double in the effort, and the two homers gave him 35 for the season, a new career high (he hit 33 in 2012). For all players with at least 1,000 games at second base through their first 12 seasons, Cano's 274 homers rank second (one homer behind Jeff Kent) and his 477 doubles rank first.
