Swisher visits specialist for ailing right knee

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Indians plan on waiting one more day before disclosing the extent of the damage in Nick Swisher's ailing right knee.

On Tuesday, Swisher was joined by Indians head athletic trainer James Quinlan in Los Angeles, where the veteran designated hitter underwent an exam by knee specialist Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Cleveland manager Terry Francona said the results of the meeting would be released by the ballclub on Wednesday.

"Nick was examined today and it kind of ran a little later," Francona said prior to Tuesday's game against the Twins. "James Quinlan is with him. We will have a complete medical update tomorrow. That way, everything can be disseminated and everybody can be talked to that needs to be, and everybody's on the same page. Then, it'll be explained."

The Indians have been coy about the possibility that Swisher might need surgery.

Through 97 games this season, the 33-year-old Swisher has hit .208 with eight home runs, 20 doubles, 42 RBIs, 36 walks, 111 strikeouts and an uncharacteristically low .278 on-base percentage. Over the previous 10 seasons in the Majors, Swisher turned in a .255/.358/.462 slash line with at least 20 homers in each of the past nine years.

Swisher, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to the troublesome right knee on Aug. 10, was signed to a four-year contract worth $56 million prior to last season.
