Maddon, Rays successful on challenge
Zobrist ruled safe at first after double play call overturned
ST. PETERSBURG -- Joe Maddon challenged a double play call in the first inning of Friday night's game vs. the Indians at Tropicana Field, and the call was overturned.
Ben Zobrist appeared to ground into a 4-6-3 double play with no outs in the bottom of the first. But Maddon felt Zobrist had beaten shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera's throw to first, so the Rays' manager paid a field visit to first-base umpire John Tumpane.
After receiving the signal from the Rays' bench, Maddon challenged the call. Mark Wegner's crew then retreated to view the video and overturned the call after 38 seconds.
"I thought he was safe and I went out and talked to the umpire about it," Maddon said.
Maddon has now had 14 challenges on the season. Of those, five have been overturned, four have stood, and five have been confirmed.
