Rays using caution with Jaso's return
Catcher likely to be out longer than expected with left-wrist contusion
TORONTO -- Kevin Cash allowed that John Jaso will likely be out longer than expected.
When the Rays' manager was asked about the slow progress of Jaso's left-wrist contusion, he said: "Yeah, I would say it's looking that way."
Jaso left the Rays' April 6 season opener after sliding head first at second base and coming away with the injury. The Rays placed him on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 7. He is eligible to come off the DL on April 22.
"It's just such a tricky injury, it's a wrist ... you've got to get the swelling out of there totally before you he can really grab a bat," Cash said. "I know he's doing different drills. Top hand stuff. We don't want him to aggravate it, re-injure it or anything. So you have to kind of let it cool off."
Outfielder Mikie Mahtook was recalled from Triple-A Durham on April 10, the day the Rays put Jaso on the DL.
