Minor League pitcher Griggs suspended 50 games

CHICAGO -- The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced Wednesday that Cubs Minor League right-hander Tanner Griggs has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for amphetamine, a stimulant in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Griggs, 21, was a 12th-round pick in the 2014 Draft. He posted a 5.50 ERA in 14 games last season for the Cubs' Rookie-level Arizona team and Class A Short-Season Eugene.

The suspension of Griggs, who was on the Arizona League roster, will be effective at the start of the 2016 season.

In January, Griggs was commended for helping to save a man's life. He was playing catch with a 61-year-old neighbor, Richard Gengler, in September 2014, when the older man collapsed. Griggs called 911, and the operator instructed him on how to do CPR for Gengler, who had suffered a heart attack. Gengler survived.
