ST. LOUIS -- Former Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly will represent the team at the MLB Draft, to be held June 9-11. The Cubs do not have a pick until No. 104, in the third round.
The Cardinals will have the 33rd and 34th overall picks as compensation for John Lackey and Jason Heyward signing with the Cubs, since both received qualifying offers from St. Louis. By signing the pair, the Cubs forfeited their first and second-round selections.
Lilly, 40, pitched for the Cubs from 2007 to 2010 and is now a special assistant for the team.
• General manager Jed Hoyer said on Monday that the Cubs will continue to carry three catchers, adding, "That spot will be fluid for much of the year."
Miguel Montero and David Ross are both veterans, and the Cubs like having Tim Federowicz as both insurance and someone who can help off the bench.
"He's a Major League catcher for sure," Hoyer said of Federowicz. "We're fortunate to have some depth at catcher. It's a position with a lot of injuries."
