ROBINSON CHIRINOS WINS 2016 JIM SUNDBERG COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Catcher Robinson Chirinos is the recipient of the 2016 Jim Sundberg Community Achievement Award, it was announced today.

The Robinson Chirinos Foundation was established in 2012 when Chirinos was forced to miss the entire season recovering from a concussion. The Foundation began it work immediately that offseason. With the help of his dad, Chirinos hosted the Foundation's first event, a baseball clinic in his hometown of Punta Fijo, Venezuela. The baseball camp provided instruction and much-needed equipment to youngsters in the same town he learned to play the game. The equipment drive and baseball camp have grown into a yearly event in the Venezuelan town where he was raised, hosting over 300 youngsters in the winter clinic every year.

The Robinson Chirinos Foundation is dedicated to not only helping in need youth and families throughout his native Venezuela but also the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. In 2016 his Foundation hosted its third annual Back2School Rally at Refus Iglesias Church in Fort Worth. Chirinos, along with his family and teammates, donated 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for Fort Worth youngsters in need.

The catcher's charitable endeavors aren't restricted to his Foundation. Chirinos and his family are familiar faces at team community initiatives. In 2015, Chirinos and his wife Heidy served as the honorary chairs of the Texas Rangers Cowboy Santa Toy Drive. He also makes visits to local hospitals in both DFW and Venezuela, has participated in the Winter Caravan, as well as hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for Arlington residents in need at the Arlington Life Shelter in both 2014 and 2015.

Chirinos will be honored at the 2017 Dr Pepper Texas Rangers Awards Dinner, which takes place on Friday night at Gilley's Dallas. A limited number of tickets for the dinner, which will honor a number of baseball personalities and feature appearances by Texas Rangers past and present, are still available at www.texasrangers.com/awards.
