The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has optioned right-handed pitcher Nick Martinez to Triple-A Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League.
That spot on the active roster will be used to activate left-handed pitcher Derek Holland from the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday, when Holland is scheduled to start at Cincinnati. Texas will need to make a corresponding move on its 40-man roster to make room for Holland, who will be making his first major league start since June 20. He has been on the DL since that time with left shoulder inflammation. Holland had a 4.50 ERA (5 ER/10.0 IP) in 3 starts on rehab assignment at Round Rock.
Martinez is 1-3. 7.16 in 8 games/5 starts over 4 stints with the Rangers this season. He allowed 2 hits and one run in 1.1 innings on August 20 at Tampa Bay in his only action since his August 17 recall.
