With 35th pick, LA drafts righty Funkhouser

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers selected right-handed pitcher Kyle Funkhouser out of the University of Louisville with the 35th overall pick of Monday's Draft, a pick they received as compensation for Boston's signing of free agent Hanley Ramirez.

Earlier, with the 24th overall pick, the Dodgers took right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler from Vanderbilt. They later added high school outfielder Mitchell Hansen and college righty Josh Sborz.

"In Buehler and Funkhouser, we feel both are good value picks," said Billy Gasparino, the Dodgers' new scouting director in charge of his first Draft. "We couldn't be more excited to get them."

The MLB.com scouting report on Funkhouser, who was ranked 14th on the MLB.com prospect list:

"Funkhouser ranked as the top prospect on the U.S. collegiate national team last summer, topping the staff with 36 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings. That capped a stellar sophomore season during which he tied for the NCAA Division I lead with 13 victories and helped Louisville reach its second straight College World Series. Undrafted out of an Illinois high school in 2012 because of his commitment to the Cardinals, Funkhouser has a solid three-pitch mix that begins with a 92-96 mph fastball. Both his slider and changeup show flashes of becoming plus offerings as well. Funkhouser's 6-foot-2, 218-pound frame is built for durability. There's some effort to his delivery, though not enough to lead scouts to think he'll wind up in the bullpen. His biggest need is to improve the consistency of his control and command. The slot salary for the Dodgers' 35th overall pick is $1,756,100 and the club's total bonus pool is $7,781,700. Funkhouser is the second of four picks the Dodgers have in the top 74."

The durable 21-year-old junior from Oak Forest, Ill, is 6-3, 225 pounds. He slipped to 8-5 in 2015 after setting a school record going 13-3 as a sophomore. He played basketball and football in high school.

According to his bio page on the Louisville website, the finance major lists his favorite athletes as Derek Jeter, Derrick Rose and Brian Urlacher. His favorite cereal is Cocoa Puffs, favorite candy bar is 3 Musketeers, his favorite foods include deep dish pizza, hot dogs and grilled chicken, favorite teams are the Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago White Sox and he was a spelling bee winner from third grade through fifth grade. His mother, Laura, played college volleyball at Indiana.

Funkhouser is 8-5 with a 3.20 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 112 1/3 innings. He ranks second in school history in with 26 wins and 281 strikeouts, and his 13 wins last year led the country.

According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, during the past two weekends his fastball has consistently hit 92-96 mph on the radar gun.

"Personally I would like not to get anything later than No. 20," he told the newspaper after Louisville's 9-3 win Sunday in the NCAA super regional. "[If that took place] I would be a little, I guess, upset with myself and a couple other things. But you never really know. Obviously I'm hoping top 10, and if not, we'll see what happens."

"The resume is awesome, the body of work," Louisville coach Dan McDonnell told the Courier-Journal. "[It's impressive] when you're the Friday night starter for Louisville in back-to-back years and lead USA Baseball in innings pitched. I'm always biased because that's my kid, but to me, that's a durable, talented arm, a 200-inning arm in professional baseball."
