The Evolution is Here: D-backs unveil new uniforms for 2016
PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks, @LosDbacks) unveiled their 2016 uniforms tonight in front of more than a thousand fans at Chase Field. The evolution of the team's on-field attire will include eight distinct uniform options and include the reintroduction of one of the franchise's popular original colors, teal, as well as a bold gray color for the team's road uniforms. In addition, a sublimated diamond pattern adorns the shoulder, back, sleeve and pant leg on various uniforms, a subtle reference to the club's name, snakeskin and diamond shape of a baseball field.
"This is an extremely proud and exciting time for our franchise," said D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall. "The Arizona Diamondbacks have always been focused on innovation and it is time for us to take that step forward on behalf of Major League Baseball and continue the evolution of our uniforms. This process began over two years ago and has involved our players, coaches, fans, partners at MLB, Majestic, New Era, Nike and an extremely talented in-house design staff. The end result is an incredible product that will appeal to all our fans, but in particular the youth movement we so desire in baseball."
"Engaging kids through participation programs, technology and other ways has been a foremost goal of Major League Baseball over the past year," said Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. "We appreciate that the Arizona Diamondbacks prioritized this goal in the redesign of their uniforms, which aim to appeal to kids while staying true to the team's identity."
The unveil event included more than a dozen current D-backs players and coaches, many of whom have been involved in the process since its inception. Manager Chip Hale and All-Stars Paul Goldschmidt, A.J. Pollock and Patrick Corbin joined franchise legends Luis Gonzalez, Randy Johnson, Matt Williams, Mark Grace and hundreds of season ticket holders, social media influencers and local elected officials on the diamond at Chase Field.
The D-backs enter their 19th season in 2016 having worn the original purple and teal colors for nine years followed by the Sedona Red, Sonoran Sand and Black colors for the previous nine years. The team's primary "A" logo remains the same while the club introduced a modernized version of the Snakehead logo, a popular club mark from 1998-2006 which will adorn the left sleeve of the uniform. The team will continue to utilize the "Throwback" uniforms that were worn on Thursdays in 2015, which was also the same uniform worn in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series.
A new three-color wordmark, in a custom stylized font, is proudly positioned across the chest of each jersey while a front number returns to a D-backs' uniform for the first time since 2002.
"I'm excited to be a part of this transition in 2016," said Goldschmidt. "It's been great to be a part of the process over the past year-plus in helping the Diamondbacks come up with uniforms that will look good and keep the tradition of both our franchise and the sport of baseball. As a player, the most important thing we can do is go out and put a winning team on the field."
