Marlins sign reliever Roe to Minor League deal
Former first-round Draft pick of Rockies in 2005 gets Spring Training invite
MIAMI -- Chaz Roe, who made 21 relief appearances with the D-backs last year, is getting a chance to hook on with the Marlins.
Miami agreed to terms with Roe on Thursday on a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
The 27-year-old spent last season with Arizona, but Roe was acquired off waivers by the Rangers on Nov. 1. Texas designated him for assignment on Friday. A few days later, Roe cleared waivers and became a free agent.
With Arizona last season, Roe threw 22 1/3 innings and posted a 4.03 ERA with 24 strikeouts. The 6-foot-5 right-hander had some command issues at the big league level, walking 13. Roe also made 25 Minor League appearances last season, posting a 1.11 ERA while striking out 23 in 24 1/3 innings.
A former first-round pick of the Rockies in 2005, Roe was suspended 50 games as a Minor Leaguer for being in violation of the joint drug prevention and treatment program.
Miami continues to add bullpen depth in preparation for Spring Training, which opens with pitchers and catchers workouts on Feb. 16 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla.
Before joining the Marlins, Roe had been in the Rockies, Mariners, D-backs and Rangers systems.
