Pair of Twins make big jump among top prospects

With 2013 Draftees signed and entered into their respective clubs' pipelines, MLB.com has re-ranked its Top 100 Prospects and each club's Top 20 Prospects.

The Twins' already deep farm system keeps getting richer, as Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano both made huge leaps in the prospect rankings. Minnesota also added top pitching prospect Kohl Stewart in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft with the No. 4 overall pick.

Buxton made the jump to the No. 1 spot after starting the season as the No. 19 overall prospect, while Sano is now ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect, moving up from the No. 12 spot.

It's almost unheard of for a team to have two prospects so highly regarded, but Buxton and Sano -- who both represented the Twins in this year's Futures Game -- have been outstanding this season. Buxton, 19, dominated Class A Cedar Rapids with his five-tool talent and is currently at Class A Advanced Fort Myers, while Sano, 20, outclassed his peers at Fort Myers and is continuing to show impressive power at Double-A New Britain.

Add with Stewart making his debut as the No. 66 overall prospect, the Twins have seven players ranked in the Top 100. Others in the Top 100 include right-hander Alex Meyer (No. 36), right-hander Kyle Gibson (No. 51), second baseman Eddie Rosario (No. 68) and right-hander Jose Berrios (No. 85).

"The system is in good shape," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said. "We've got some players, and some are closer than others. The two kids in the Futures Game are certainly on a faster track. They're both very talented and highly skilled. And they're both good human beings, which is a good thing."

Graduated

Aaron Hicks was ranked the club's No. 6 prospect entering the season but has gone on to be Minnesota's center fielder and has played better since a slow start. Oswaldo Arcia, who was rated as the club's fifth-best prospect, has also seen action with the Twins this year, and while he's currently at Triple-A Rochester, he graduated from the list as well. Right-hander Ryan Pressly, who was a Rule 5 Draft pick from the Red Sox, started the year as the organization's No. 18 prospect and has fared well as a reliever with Minnesota this year.

Dropped off

Left-hander Corey Williams and right-hander Hudson Boyd both fell out of the club's Top 10 list, as they've both struggled this year. Williams, ranked at No. 16 and pitching for Fort Myers, and Boyd, at No. 19 and pitching for Cedar Rapids, both have ERAs above 5.00 this season.

New faces

Stewart is the most notable addition, as the right-hander is ranked as the team's fifth-best prospect and was taken as the No. 4 overall pick in the Draft out of St. Pius X High School in Houston. But three other players taken in this year's Draft also made the cut, including right-hander Ryan Eades (No. 10), left-hander Stephen Gonsalves (No. 17) and catcher Stuart Turner (No. 19). Cedar Rapids second baseman Jorge Polanco (No. 10) and rookie-level Elizabethton right-hander Felix Jorge (No. 20) are also new to the list.

Rising/falling stock

Buxton made the biggest leap, as he's now baseball's top prospect, while Sano moved up nine spots in the rankings to No. 3. Rosario and Berrios also weren't ranked in the Top 100 before the season, but they jumped into the rankings.

Top 100 representation

With seven players in the Top 100, the Twins have the second-most in the Majors behind only the Astros and Red Sox, who have eight each. And using MLB.com's prospect points system, which assigns 100 points to the team with the No. 1 prospect, 99 to the team with No. 2 and so on, the Twins rank as second in baseball behind only the Astros. That's a move up from their preseason ranking of fourth.
