Gonzalez activated; Pearce placed on DL

TORONTO -- The Orioles placed outfielder Steve Pearce on the 15-day disabled list with left wrist tendinitis, retroactive to June 20, and reinstated right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from the paternity list on Friday.

Pearce has been battling pain in both wrists and receiving treatment, manager Buck Showalter said. Showalter is optimistic that Pearce will be ready to come off the DL when eligible, but cautioned that wrist injuries can linger.

"He isn't going to do anything for a few days and see how it resolves," Showalter said. "There are certain things you can play through, but there is a lot of discomfort there."

Pearce is batting .235 with three homers and nine RBIs in 28 games.

Gonzalez, who was away from the club for five days for the birth of his first child, a baby girl, will start Saturday's contest against the Blue Jays. Gonzalez has won his last three starts, with a 2.21 ERA over that stretch.
