Orioles recall McFarland to bolster bullpen

BALTIMORE -- Seeking to bolster their bullpen, the Orioles recalled left-hander T.J McFarland from Triple-A Norfolk prior to Friday's game, optioning Preston Guilmet to clear a roster spot.

McFarland, who had been slated to start on Friday for Norfolk, gives the O's some length, if needed, behind starter Bud Norris. Guilmet has pitched well for the O's, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings on Thursday against his former Indians team, and could be back within the 10-day window, thanks to a loophole.

The Orioles are planning on putting Chris Davis on the paternity list on Sunday, which would give them a chance to add another player regardless of the rule that requires a player to stay in the Minors for 10 days after being optioned.

The O's could then keep that player once Davis comes back and clear a roster spot another way. It's an interesting rule and one that manager Buck Showalter suggested that the organization will try to use to their advantage.
