Third to first

• Jake Peavy selected the 1983 retro uniforms for the White Sox to wear in their series finale against the Tigers on Thursday afternoon. Those uniforms are usually reserved for Sundays, but Peavy said he never had a chance to don that uniform and made the decision. It's the starting pitcher's call on what uniform the team will wear on any given day, and the decision by Peavy might have been influenced by the possibility that Thursday's start would be his last as a member of the White Sox.

"I wanted to wear it," Peavy said after the White Sox 7-4 win. "I never wore it. Last year I never made a start on Sunday and didn't get to pitch in those -- and we all know the situation -- and I hadn't pitched in these, and these are so cool. When Vinny asked me if we were wearing black or white, I said, 'How about those? Let's get the Sunday uniform out.' And I appreciate Robin [Ventura] letting me wear it."

• Entering play Wednesday, of the 98 games the White Sox had played this season, 74 of them (75.5 percent) had been decided by three runs or fewer. That included 33 of their past 45 contests, and in those 33 games, the White Sox were 10-23

• The White Sox pitching staff ranked among the American League leaders in home opponents' batting average (.240, third), slugging percentage (.374, third), OPS (.678, third), ERA (3.72, fourth) and WHIP (1.24, fourth)
