Three Phils nearing extended spring games

PHOENIX -- Right-handed pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez is working out as a starter and will pitch in an extended spring training game soon.

He threw to hitters on Sunday.

"His mechanics are looking much more fluid," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said. "We're just building his arm back after being injured. He was up to 94 [mph] when he pitched for us in Spring Training. We just have to get him going again."

Also, outfielder Darin Ruf (strained oblique) remains on track to play in extended spring training games. Amaro does not expect Ruf to be activated during the upcoming seven-game homestand.

"He needs at-bats," the general manager said. "He needs to play in games. We'll start him off at extended and see where he goes from there but he needs Abs."

Ethan Martin (strained right shoulder) will pitch in an extended spring training game Monday.
